March Radness: Round 1, Day 4!

marchradness.JPGIt’s day four of the first round of March Radness! Not clear on what this is all about? Go here. For a refresher, you can check out the matchups online at Tournament Pilot, or you can download the printable bracket with every matchup.

It was a tight race over the weekend, but in the battle of the lesser of two evils, someone had to come out on top. And unfortunately, it was the #10 seed, The Bridge and Tunnel Crowd, that outpaced #7 Upper East Side Fratboys, 56-44. I’m guessing there was an influx of kids from Jersey in the weekend voting. In other action, Park Slope Moms soundly defeated the Staten Island Guidos – so one borough has officially been eliminated from the tournament. Here are the final scores from the weekend:

(7) U.E.S. Fratboys 44     (10) The Bridge and Tunnel Crowd 56

(4) The Line at Trader Joe’s 86     (13) Pinkberry 14

(6) The New Yankee Stadium 55     (11) A Vial of Agassi’s Tears 45

(3) Mary-Kate’s Toothbrush 61     (14) STK 39

(2) Park Slope Moms 80     (15) Staten Island Guidos 20

We’ll start today’s matchups in the Wintour Region, where two whiny restauranteurs face off in the 7-10 game: it’s Jeffrey Chodorow’s Kobe Club, the apparent victim of a drive-by panning in the New York Times, versus Keith McNally’s war with the big-ass Billboard at the Hotel Gansevoort.

Round 1, Game 7 – Wintour Region: Voting Over!
-> (7) The Kobe Club 43
-> (10) Hotel Gansevoort Billboard 57

Next in the Wintour Region, the #2 seed West Chelsea shouldn’t have to put up too much of a fight. While its challengers, Muffin Tops, are easily as despicable, the closing of B.E.D., the Roxy, and the revocation of the liquor license at Scores West have strangely made West Chelsea a little more tolerable.

Round 1, Game 8 – Wintour Region: Voting Over!
-> (2) West Chelsea 61
-> (15) Muffin Tops 39

To the Markowitz Region we go, where it’s a face-off we’ve all been waiting for: the underdog and potential Cinderella Story out of this region, #14 seed Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn, takes on #3 seed Atlantic Yards. We call this a toss-up: on one side, you’ve got a ragtag bunch of anti-growth hippies with the backing of celebrities; on the other, a giant developer with no respect for personal property or attractive architecture.

Round 1, Game 6 – Markowitz Region: Voting Over!
-> (3) Atlantic Yards 28
-> (14) Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn 72

Next in the Markowitz Region, the #1 seed, Billyburg Hipsters, faces the winner of last week’s play-in game, #16 seed The G Train. Since the New York Times has confirmed what we’ve known all along – that trust-fund babies and their parents are making Williamsburg even more ironic than ever, the Hipsters’ stock is up, especially against a relative unknown in the G Train - when I took the G Train to work a few years ago, a 75-year-old lifelong New Yorker in our office said, “there’s a G Train? You must be mistaken. I’ve never heard of any G Train.”

Round 1, Game 1 – Markowitz Region: Voting Over!
-> (1) Billyburg Hipsters 52
-> (16) The G Train 48

Finally, today is opening day at Shake Shack, so now is a good time to let you judge what is less obnoxious: waiting in the ever-present Line at Shake Shack, or those talented and wealthy Subway Panhandlers.

Round 1, Game 5 – Bloomberg Region: Voting Over!
-> (6) Subway Panhandlers 33
-> (11) The Line at Shake Shack 67

Good luck to today’s teams. And Happy St. Joseph’s Day! Especially to the Staten Island Guidos. Cheer up, boys.
